MONDAY,
JUNE 17:
Today was
a catch-up day. Did laundry here at the
campsite, caught up on some e-mail’s, posting the blog, etc., and went into
town for groceries and to the Visitors Center.
Also, Bill found out that there was a bike shop here, and so he dropped
off the recumbents to have the tires replaced.
He tried to do it himself, but was having trouble. The bike guy said that it was very difficult
to get that size tires on without a special tool.
The gal
at the Visitors Center was really helpful in guiding us toward what should be
some good hikes and bike rides. We really
weren’t sure how we’d spend a week here . ..
given our choice, we’d have only stayed 3 or 4 days, probably, enough to
take our Glacier Kayaking tour and a couple of other days. But because of the ferry schedule, we were
“stuck” here for a week. After getting
advice from the Visitors Center, however, we feel that we will have a good week
here. Of course, that’s always somewhat
dependent on the weather. It started off
overcast and then light rain off and on til mid-afternoon; then the clouds
broke, and blue sky and sunshine. Was perfectly lovely then – considerably
cooler than the last couple of days.
Hope it
stays clear through tomorrow – we have our Kayak Adventure tour. The guide takes us out on his boat for 2 or 3
hours, then we get into kayaks for a couple of hours to paddle around LeConte
Bay, where there’s a big tidewater glacier.
This excursion was the biggest draw for us stopping at Petersburg.
Bill
grilled spareribs and glazed corn-on-the-cob for dinner. Tasted yummy, even though we had to eat
inside – there’s no room for picnic tables here.
