SATURDAY, JUNE 1

SATURDAY, JUNE 1:

A relatively easy day.  Mostly clear skies as we drove west, although began clouding up some as we approached the coast.  Beautiful drive thru the Canadian coastal mountains.  Paralleled the Skeena River for long stretches.  In places, it was moving really fast – with lots of little rapids, and looked oooohhhh cold!  This is the river that thousands of gold prospectors sailed down in the late 19th & early 20th centuries in order to get to Alaska and the Yukon/Klondike.

The last 100 miles or so was especially gorgeous – designated a scenic road by most maps. Stopped a few times to stretch our legs and breathe in the beauty.

Arrived in Prince Rupert about 5:00.   A milestone – our gateway to Alaska!  Have driven 3,050 miles so far!   The RV Park is a nice park, with some terraced spaces, backing up to woods.   We’re on a slope, but Bill got it leveled.  The owner assigned us this spot because we inquired about WiFi, and apparently this spot is closer to the signal.
We got out the grill and fixed brats and enjoyed eating them outside in the pleasantly cool, fresh air.  First time on this trip we’ve grilled and eaten outside – felt great to do that!  Except for the interruption from our RV neighbor, who drove up in his car (his Class A was parked beside us), got out, strode over, and first words out of his mouth were, “Well, since you took our (picnic) table, what’s for dinner?”  His aggressive, clumsy way of trying to be humorous . . . and it only went downhill from there.  We were glad when Crabby George went inside, and hope to avoid him for the duration.  We both think that he’s only the 2nd unpleasant neighbor we’ve ever met in all of our RV journeys thus far; most people in these RV parks are friendly, pleasant, and helpful.
After dinner, we walked down to the harbor and Ferry dock.  It’s only ½ mile.  Wanted to get oriented, plus thought they might be open to answer questions and get us booked.  But they have business hours and won’t be open til Monday morning.  When we got back, I started looking on-line, and realized that the only sailings out of Prince Rupert for the upcoming week are Tuesday and not again til next Saturday.  I don’t know why, but somehow I had formed the impression that sailings from here were mostly every day, and we’d have our choice, especially being so early in the season.  Not true.  Seeing all the RV’s here, we realized that most of them were probably booked on Tuesday’s ferry.  The ferry which services Prince Rupert only carries 89 vehicles – and some large RV’s like ours probably take up space assigned for 4.   We began to get a sinking feeling that maybe we wouldn’t be able to get booked on Tuesday’s ferry, nor possibly even Saturday’s.  Well, all we can do is wait til the ferry office opens Monday morning, and find out then.  I really dropped the ball on this one – me, not Bill, because I’m the one who researched everything and is supposed to be aware of these details.  L
Well, if we’re delayed here a week or more, there are some things we can see and do here, especially if it’s nice weather.  And we both have lots of reading material!  Bill brought the little TV from our bedroom at home, but realized today that he forgot the remote.  So unless we can find a universal remote, the TV is worthless.  So score 1 mess-up for each of us!
