SUNDAY,
JUNE 2:
Slept in
til past 9:30!! Then had a leisurely
morning as we waited for the cloud cover to clear. Made breakfast of scrambled eggs, bacon, and
the rest of Jim & Mary’s delicious lemon poppyseed bread. Bill was outside talking with some other guys
who said that wolves had come thru the park this morning, as well as deer. No doubt that lots of wildlife lives in the
woods bordering the RV Park.
Around
noon or 1:00, we took a walk on a trail at the edge of the RV Park. The owner pointed it out to us. He’s a very nice man – Japanese, not
native-born (Canadian), I believe, as his English is somewhat broken. And his wife’s English is pretty
limited. They bought this park 8 years
ago.
The trail leads back into woods, with several
little spurs off of it. It was blazed to
accommodate water treatment/sewer pipes.
It was a beautiful walk - the sun was out, the temperature was probably
in the mid-upper 60’s, and the woods were lovely, dark and deep (thanks, Robert.
Frost). Full of different varieties of
Spruce. Classic Canadian coastal forest.
Then drove
into town to get a few groceries, and planned to drop by a couple of local
places of interest – e.g., the Seaplane base, a couple of notable city parks. But had become ominously cloudy again, and rained
some while we were shopping. It’s hard
to plan much outdoors – there will be big patches of blue sky, but then other
parts will be covered with grey rainclouds. Hard to guess which one will prevail! We realize that will be a norm in parts of
Alaska, and are prepared to spend time in the rain. But if we don’t have anything special
planned here that we won’t be disappointed to not have done, we’d just as soon
stay dry!
Saw a
couple of deer right in town –one young buck crossing the street!
Came back
& napped & relaxed. Then prepared
dinner – steaks & accompaniments. Grilled
outdoors, but ate indoors as was just a tad too cool to stay seated outside
while we ate. Nobody else was out
either, we noticed. But after dinner & cleaning up, felt
perfect to take a twilight walk around the RV Park with Pappy, as long as we
had jackets on.
We noticed that almost all the rigs had
their lights off. Seemed strange til
Bill looked at his watch – 10:35! We had at least another 30 minutes of
twilight. Wow!
First
thing tomorrow we’ll head to the Ferry office to find out when they can
accommodate us and, consequently, how long our stay here will be. No dawdling tomorrow morning!
