WEDNESDAY,
JUNE 19:
After a
slow start this morning, we drove south a few miles along the Mitkof Highway to
find a hiking trail or two which the gal at the Visitors Center had
recommended. We did find them – they
were actually more like “walks” than hiking trails. But that was fine – we both felt kind of
tired.
The first was just a short walk down a
boardwalk to a stream. Really
lovely. They call this spot “Blind River
Rapids,” but the tide must have been wrong, because we certainly didn’t see
anything that looked like rapids. A little riffle, maybe.
The other
was by Ohmer Creek, a 1-mile path in the Rain Forest. Any walk in the woods is nice, but there was
nothing exceptional in this one.
Bill
noticed bear scat along both trails, as well as footprints that looked like
bear and moose. If we went back at
twilight, may be a good chance to see some wildlife. Also, we became well introduced to the Alaska
State Bird on these walks – aka the mosquito.
Applied our heavy duty DEET repellent that we were advised to bring with
us up here, and that seemed to do the trick.
Scouted
out an area where Scott (our guide yesterday) said was a great secluded kayak
place.
Came back
and napped, walked Pappy, then had leftover spareribs for dinner. Fresh cherries for dessert. Yum.
