MONDAY
& TUESDAY, AUG 19 & 20:
Rain,
rain, rain! All day both days.
On
Monday, Bill took the truck in to town to get the oil changed. A lazy day for me – reading, napping,
researching on line for next leg(s) of our trip.
Tuesday
we drove up the Parks Hwy to Denali Nat’l Park.
On clear days, you can have some great views of Mt. McKinley (or simply
“Denali”) from this road. But not
today! Actually, I read in several
places that on any given day, there’s only about a 30% chance of seeing The
Great One (as it’s also called – what’s what “Denali” means in the Native
language). The rest of the time, it’s
hidden behind clouds/fog/rain. We’ll hope
for the best!
Even
though the trip was only about 220 miles, it took well over 5 hours. Where they were doing what they
euphemistically call “repairs” here was horrible – almost as bad as the Alcan.
Found our
RV park without any trouble. In a pretty
place – backs up to a mountain range.
And laid out so that it feels like a park. We’ll see it better tomorrow if it clears
up! All of the other private ones in the
area sounded like dumps – crowded, not maintained, noisy. And the campgrounds inside the National Park
sound lovely, as they usually are, but no hook-up’s. We can’t dry camp for 4 or 5 days, even if we
wanted to – the battery would give out, etc.
Tomorrow we’ll head into the Natl Park and
get oriented.
