WEDNESDAY, JULY 31

WEDNESDAY, JULY 31:
Weren’t in a hurry to leave . . . just took our time getting ready and packed up.  I still have my sore throat, but I think it’s a little better, and now feels like it will develop into a cold. Not too bad of one, I hope.
Stopped again at the Wrangell-St. Elias Visitors Center in Copper Center.  Poked around some of the 3-dimensional maps, which of course now had more relevance to us.
Headed down the Richardson Hwy.  This is designated a National Scenic Highway.  Especially as we drove through the Thompson Pass area further south, magnificent views of glacier-carved mountains, lots of waterfalls, etc.  The big glacier is Worthington.  Photos don’t do it justice – you need the whole panorama to really see it.

Had made reservations at an RV park in the middle of downtown – right across from the harbor.  The reviews sounded like it was the best choice.  But when we got there, we were really disappointed.  It was strictly a gravel parking lot –not a tree in sight, the sites were packed together so that you’d almost need to walk sideways between them, and any vistas of the mountains and harbor were interrupted by all kinds of shops, businesses, assorted other buildings, and parking lots and cars everywhere.  Plus, there’s a Gold Rush celebration going on this week . . . which probably means lots of noise.  Which is fine for those who like a festive atmosphere, but not for us in our back yard.

We remembered that we’d passed a woodsy-looking RV Park 2 or 3 miles up the road on the way in.  I looked them up on the internet (we’d already checked in and paid for 5 nites when we looked around and thought, “What have we done??”).  Bill called the other park, and they had vacancy, and so Bill then went up to the office and explained that this really just wasn’t what we were looking for.  Were prepared to have to stay tonite, but hoped he’d refund our $$ for the remaining 4 nites.  But he graciously refunded all 5 nites, explaining that if we wanted trees, there was only 1 RV park around that we’d like, and it was, of course, the one we’d already determined we’d like a whole lot better.
So buttoned up the RV again and re-hitched the truck, and headed back up the highway.  This place is much, much more in line with our tastes & expectations, not to mention $7 a nite cheaper!

Ate leftover ribs & sides which tasted good, even to me with my cold.
Had a relaxing evening of reading before we went to bed fairly early.   Weather has turned cool and overcast, after a warm, sunny day.  I think that’s typical for here, back on the coast.  We sure enjoyed those days of bright, warm sunshine while we had them!
