SUNDAY,
AUG 18:
It rained all last night, and through the
morning. A relaxing
Sabbath rest day. Went to worship at the log church we’d seen before, the one
build in 1937 the Matanuska Colonists.
It’s still called the United Protestant Church, but is definitely
Presbyterian, part of PCUSA. It has a
married couple as the co-pastors. Both
led parts of the service this morning.
The woman reminded us both of Wendy Myers, especially in her
speech. She did the children’s sermon
and the congregational prayer, which were both very purposeful and effective.
We chatted
at length with the older man (a widower) sitting next to us. He came up here decades ago from Texas on a
work assignment . . . and when the job was completed, told his boss, “I believe
I’m just going to stay here.” Not sure
what he did for a living, but earned enough to own a Piper cub plane and a
boat. Not that unusual – we wouldn’t be
surprised to learn that there are more private planes & boats owned &
registered in the state than there are motor vehicles. He recounted some stories of where his plane
had taken him – even to Russia.
After we
came home and had lunch, just rested, napped, and otherwise lazed around. Grilled the salmon Bill had caught back in
Valdez for dinner – not bad, especially after having been frozen for a couple
of weeks.
