SATURDAY
& SUNDAY, AUGUST 3 & 4:
Rain, cool, overcast. Started raining sometime Friday night and
continued all Sat. morning. Stopped for
a while Saturday afternoon, and Bill grabbed the window to try his luck at
salmon fishing in the spot where he was yesterday. I stayed home. He came back beaming – caught 2 good-sized
pinks (about 15 lbs each).
He fileted them and froze them. More rain that night. L can’t believe that Southeast gets any more
rain than this area does! These folks
sure pay a price for their glorious perfect days, when they have them!
Not so
rainy on Sunday, but overcast, cloudy, & foggy nearly all day. And cool – in low 50’s. Even the locals had jackets on at church! We ended up going to a Baptist church. There
was a sign in the RV shower room for a non-denominational one that sounded
nice. Wrote down the directions, but
couldn’t find anything close by but this Baptist church, and the service was at
11:00 (same as the other one stated), so went there. Was OK – typical Baptist preaching
style. Again, not too friendly, which
has been our experience the last few times we’ve visited a church. Disappointing.
Afterwards, we went to a little restaurant on the harbor to have some
lunch. A major disappointment! High prices ($20 for 2 small fish tacos). And the fish tacos were the worst I’ve ever
had – totally tasteless. Bill’s Fish ‘n’
Chips were ok. The clam chowder, which
is all we should have ordered, was fine.
Took it
easy for the rest of the afternoon, then ventured back to the fishing place
about 4:30. Bill had purchased a 3-day
Alaskan fishing license, so wanted to use it again, even though he knew he’d
throw them back, as we had no more freezer space. He caught about 8. Since they’re so easy to catch – literally effortless,
I asked him how that could be very sporting or fun, and he said that the challenge
came in reeling the guys in – they’re all strong fighters, and it’s like a wrestling
match. He thoroughly enjoyed himself
while I took a read a book on a nearby bench, bundled up against the cold!
Swim, little (and big) salmon! You can make it!
. If it looks like it’s not going to rain tomorrow, we’re going to try kayaking at the location we saw the other day. We don’t expect a beautiful day, but as long as it’s not raining, we’ll bundle up and try it. There may not be many more opportunities similar to this, to kayak among the icebergs up close to a tidewater glacier.
The RV
Park here is almost deserted. Don’t know
if it’s strictly an overnight stop for most folks, or if people gave up because
of the weather and left. Has a real
North Woods feel to it, with the fir trees shrouded in clouds and fog, and very
little human activity around.
